AB 1376 Emergency
On September 6, Voters Injured At Work succeeded in an effort to secure emergency legislation for interpreters and injured workers in the state. The bill, AB 1376, responds to a state rule put in place in August. It creates a compliance period until March 1, 2014, for interpreters. It will allow hundreds more qualified interpreters to gain certification for medical visits in the workers compensation system. California faces a shortage of certified interpreters. Without the bill, thousands of injured workers could lose access to medical attention in a language they understand via qualified interpreters.
Now we need to pass this important and urgent bill. The legislature adjourns at the end of this week. We have 4 days. Only with your vocal support can we achieve our goal.
Here’s what you can do immediately:
1) Get a letter of support for AB 1376 to VIAW on your letterhead. Send it today to firstname.lastname@example.org OR fax it to 213-746-9222.
2) Tell colleagues to support for AB 1376. Prompt the interpreters and agencies you know to submit their letter of support to VIAW.
3) Make a donation. Urge colleagues to contribute to VIAW’s emergency campaign for interpreters and injured workers. You can donate securely online by clicking HERE.
